That “Sports Bra” Isn’t a Sports Bra: The Technology Changing Modern Sports

If you’ve watched professional soccer, NFL/College football, or the 2026 World Cup, you’ve probably noticed it: a tight black vest underneath an athlete’s jersey that looks remarkably like a sports bra.

It isn’t.

It’s a GPS performance vest, and it has become one of the most important pieces of technology in elite sports. My older two sons both play Division I college football, so I’ve seen these devices up close. What looks like a simple piece of clothing is actually collecting an enormous amount of information about how an athlete is moving and performing.

What is the vest actually measuring?

The vest holds a small tracking device against the athlete’s upper back, near the body’s center of mass. Inside are sensors that can measure location, speed, acceleration, deceleration, changes of direction, impacts and, depending on the system, heart rate and other physiological information.

That means coaches and sports scientists can see far more than simply how many miles a player covered.

They can measure top speed, sprint distance, acceleration and deceleration, movement patterns and overall workload.

And that matters because two athletes can cover the same distance while experiencing dramatically different physical demands.

A player who runs continuously at a moderate pace is experiencing something very different from one repeatedly sprinting, stopping, cutting and accelerating.

The technology captures those differences.

The injury-prevention potential is fascinating

Perhaps the most interesting application isn't performance—it's load management.

Teams can establish an individual athlete's normal workload and movement patterns. When those patterns change, it may provide an early warning that something isn't right.

A drop in high-speed running, changes in acceleration or unusual movement patterns can potentially signal fatigue or increased injury risk before an athlete actually feels injured.

Instead of simply asking, “How do you feel today?” coaches can combine that answer with objective data.

What does this have to do with you?

You probably aren't wearing a GPS vest to the gym.

But the underlying idea is increasingly relevant to all of us.

The same philosophy is behind the explosion of consumer wearables from companies such as Garmin, Whoop, Oura and Polar: measure what your body is actually doing instead of guessing.

You don't need elite-level technology to benefit from the concept.

Track your workouts. Pay attention to resting heart rate, sleep and recovery. Notice changes in your energy and performance. Establish your own baseline—and pay attention when something consistently moves away from it.

Elite athletes aren't using technology simply to work harder. They're using it to understand when to push, when to recover and when something may be changing.

That may be the bigger lesson for the rest of us.

The goal isn't to collect more data. It's to use better information to make better decisions about your health.
